Download gates explained: how to trade a free track for a real fan

What a download gate is, when it works better than a plain link, and how to set one up so fans actually finish it. A practical guide for independent artists.

A download gate is a page where a listener gets a file (usually a track, stem pack or sample kit) after completing one or two small actions: following you on SoundCloud, saving a track on Spotify, subscribing on YouTube, or leaving an email address. The download is the reward; the action is the price.

It sounds transactional, and it is. That is exactly why it works: the value exchange is clear, the effort is tiny, and the person on the other side already wanted your music enough to click.

A plain "free download" link gives the file away and keeps nothing. A gate keeps one durable thing per download: a follower, a save, a subscriber or an email. Which of those matters depends on where you are.

  • You have a new project with almost no audience. Ask for a follow on the platform where you release most often. Follower counts compound: every future upload reaches those people without an ad budget.
  • You release on Spotify and care about algorithmic playlists. Ask for a save or a follow. Saves and follows are signals Spotify uses when deciding whether to test your song in Discover Weekly and Release Radar.
  • You play shows or sell merch. Ask for an email. Followers belong to the platform; an email list belongs to you, and it is the only channel that still works if a platform changes its algorithm or closes your account.

If you are not sure, ask for one platform action and make the email field optional. You will lose fewer people at the gate and still collect a portion of addresses.

What to give away

The gate only works if the file is something people want. A few formats that reliably earn the click:

  1. A track that is not on streaming services. An extended mix, an instrumental, an early version or a live take. Scarcity is the point.
  2. Stems or a remix pack. Producers will happily follow you for parts they can work with. This also seeds remixes and reposts without you asking.
  3. A sample kit or preset bank. If you produce, this is the strongest offer you have. It brings in other producers, who are the people most likely to share your work.
  4. A high-quality version of a released song. WAV instead of a compressed stream still matters to DJs.

Do not gate something that is already free elsewhere. People check.

Setting up a gate that people finish

Most abandoned gates fail on the page, not on the offer. The fixes are simple.

Keep it to one screen

Cover art, a short player so people can preview the track, the action buttons, the download button. Nothing else. Every extra paragraph is a reason to leave.

Ask for one thing, maybe two

Each additional required action removes a noticeable share of people. Two required actions is the practical ceiling. If you want three signals, make the third optional.

Preview before you ask

A 30 second preview of the track on the gate page removes the biggest doubt: "is this even good?" If your platform supports a native player, use it. If not, embed one.

Say what happens next

A single line under the buttons ("Follow to unlock the WAV, no card, no spam") lowers the perceived cost. People are wary of email fields; telling them exactly what you will send makes the difference.

Deliver instantly

The file must appear right after the last action. If you send it by email later, you will lose the people who were on a phone and moved on.

Where to put the gate

The gate is the destination, so it needs traffic from somewhere:

  • SoundCloud "Buy" or "Free Download" link. Every SoundCloud track has a purchase link field. Point it at the gate and label it "Free Download". Listeners who like the track are one click away.
  • Bio links. Instagram, TikTok and YouTube channel links. If you use a smart link in your bio, add the gate as one of its buttons.
  • Video descriptions. Especially on YouTube, where people read descriptions.
  • DMs and comments. When someone asks for the track, send the gate instead of the file. That is a fan who is happy to do the action.

Reading the numbers

A gate gives you three figures worth watching:

  • Views to unlocks. The share of visitors who complete the actions. Below roughly one in three usually means the page is asking for too much or the preview is missing.
  • Unlocks to downloads. Should be close to 100 percent. If it is not, the download step is broken on some devices.
  • Which action people pick when actions are optional. That tells you where your audience already is.

Watch these for a week per release rather than chasing daily swings.

A realistic expectation

A download gate will not make a song popular. It converts the attention a song already gets into followers, saves and emails that you keep. Put it behind every free file you share, keep the page short, and the audience you build stops resetting to zero with every release.

You can build a gate with follow, save, subscribe and email actions in a few minutes on HypeLoves; the free plan includes unlimited download gates.

Key takeaways

  • Gate files people cannot get elsewhere: unreleased versions, stems, sample kits.
  • Ask for one required action, two at most. Make email optional if you also ask for a follow.
  • Preview on the page, deliver instantly, keep everything on one screen.
  • Point your SoundCloud "Free Download" link and your bio links at the gate.
  • Track views to unlocks per release; fix the page before changing the offer.
